What is Wound Vac Therapy?

Wound Vac Therapy—also known as Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT)—is an advanced treatment that helps wounds heal faster and more effectively.

NPWT is a medical procedure that requires a doctor's order. It is not a substitute for standard wound care, and there are contraindications and potential risks.

Learn How to Apply NPWT

How it Works

Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT), works by applying controlled suction to a wound to promote healing by removing excess fluid, debris, and bacteria, while also stimulating the growth of new tissue.

  • A special dressing (foam or gauze) is placed over the wound, and a transparent adhesive film seals the wound area.
  • A vacuum pump is connected to the dressing via a tube, creating negative pressure (suction).
  • This suction draws fluid, debris, and bacteria from the wound, promoting a clean and moist environment.
  • The negative pressure also gently pulls the wound edges together, which can help reduce the size of the wound and encourage healing.
  • The suction also stimulates the formation of new tissue (granulation tissue) and improves blood flow to the wound.

The Benefits

  • Accelerated wound healing.
  • Reduced risk of infection.
  • May reduce the need for surgery.
  • May reduce pain.
  • May reduce the cost of care.

🧬What Happens at the Cellular Level

1.   Stimulates Cellular Growth

  • The gentle suction encourages the growth of granulation tissue, which is the healthy tissue your body needs to rebuild the wound area.

  • It also promotes angiogenesis — the formation of new blood vessels — helping deliver oxygen and nutrients to the wound bed.

2.   Removes Inflammatory Fluids

  • NPWT removes exudate (wound fluid), which can be filled with bacteria and inflammatory proteins that slow healing.

  • This helps reduce swelling (edema) and clears the way for better cell signaling and tissue regeneration.

3.   Reduces Bacterial Load

  • The sealed, sterile system limits external contamination and helps keep bacteria from multiplying.

  • By removing fluid and debris, it also decreases the risk of infection, creating a healthier environment for healing.

4.   Microdeformation

  • At a microscopic level, the negative pressure gently pulls on the cells in the wound bed, slightly stretching them. This is called microdeformation and it stimulates the body to produce new tissue more rapidly.

🏥What You Can See and Measure

1.   Faster Wound Closure

  • NPWT significantly accelerates healing time, especially in complex or chronic wounds (like pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, or surgical wounds).

  • This helps reduce the length of therapy and time to discharge.

2.   Improved Wound Appearance

  • The therapy helps the wound edges draw together (“wound contraction”) and improves the overall visual progress of healing.

  • Less slough, less odor, and healthier tissue all mean better patient morale and nursing confidence.

3.   Reduces Dressing Change Frequency

  • Fewer dressing changes are needed, which:

  • Saves staff time

  • Increases patient comfort

  • Minimizes exposure of the wound to outside elements

4.   Cost-Efficiency

  • Faster healing = fewer days on treatment

  • Reduced infections = fewer hospitalizations or complications

  • Improved outcomes = more predictable care plans and better reimbursement opportunities

5.   Enhanced Patient Satisfaction

  • Less pain, less odor, faster results — patients often feel more empowered and hopeful when they see visible progress.
